CMU Blocks
CMU (Concrete Masonry Unit) blocks are one of the most commonly used materials for building walls, fences, and retaining structures. These blocks are made using a mixture of Portland cement, aggregates and water. Because of their strength, resilience, and versatility, CMUs are a popular choice for both commercial and residential projects. Understanding the different CMU block types is essential for selecting the right materials for construction projects, as each type offers unique benefits.
We offer CMU blocks in gray, brown, beige, and earth tone, and they come in a variety of sizes and types. The most popular sizes for fencing projects are (4x8x16), (6x8x16) and (8x8x16).
The (4x8x16) interlocking fence blocks are the most regularly used blocks for residential properties, where full structural or load bearing walls are not required. They are thinner and lighter than the standard block, and the interlocking design allows the them to fit together securely. They rely on columns for stability and support because they are not big enough to insert rebar and fill with grout. Columns are fully grouted, reinforced with rebar, and they run the length of the wall, spaced no more than 12 LF apart. (4x8x16) are a popular option for perimeter fencing because of its slim look that gives it a more modern appearance. Given that they weigh less, they are easier to handle, quicker to install, and require less foundation support. If you are looking for a more affordable option, (4x8x16) block is the best choice as labor and material expenses are lower than those of 8 or 6- inch blocks.
(6x8x16) and (8x8x16) blocks are bigger and have more area for rebar and grout, which considerably increases their load-bearing capacity and makes them much stronger and more durable than 4-inch block. They are frequently found in commercial structures, heavy-duty fence walls, retaining walls, load-bearing walls, and foundations. For supporting vertical loads and sustaining lateral pressure, such as dirt in retaining walls, (8x8x16) block is the best option.
Split-face block
Looking for something different than the rest?
Aside from standard blocks, there are a number of cmu block types that are designed to simply boost the appearance of masonry constructions.
Split-face blocks are a popular option where aesthetics are important because of its rough, textured surface, that resembles stone. Another option is the single-scored block that is molded with a vertical groove into the face, giving them the appearance of two half size blocks. These blocks add dimension and a more stylish look without compromising the strength and durability of traditional CMUs. Availability varies. Certain designs, colors and sizes may require a special order to be placed.
